This photograph was taken in the bear pit in Sheffield's wonderful Botanical Gardens. This beautiful sculpture stands nearly two and a half metres tall and might be considered as a "life-size" representation of a bear. It stands here as a reminder of the sinister past of "the bear pit" in here in the Botanical Gardens. In the days before we we knew better, a black bear and later two grizzly bears called this place home.
There are many places in Sheffield with a link to the past. This photograph was taken in the bear pit in the Botanical Gardens in the bear pit once used in less enlightened times to keep bears for display and entertainment.
