Red Squirrel in Ferns

I just love these wonderful and feisty little creatures! The once common red squirrel is now only confined to some very small and protected areas in the UK which is a real tragedy. The non-native grey squirrel carried squirrel pox (to which the greys are immune but the reds not), this has all but wiped out the red squirrel here in the UK.

Red Squirrel Galloway Forest Park

This red squirrel was photographed scampering through the leaf litter at the Kirroughtree Visitors Centre in the Galloway Forest Park in Scotland in 2015. Dumfries and Galloway is one of the few places in the UK where the red squirrel is hanging on (just) through a massive conservation project.
